Unchosen - Human Trafficking Film Competition
20 February 2013
The charity Unchosen has launched a short film competition to draw attention to the impact of human trafficking.
The first Unchosen Human Trafficking Short Film Competition invites both amateur and professional filmmakers to turn their cameras on the stories of people smuggled into the UK, often forced to work illegally and sometimes lured into a secret life of sexual exploitation.
Unchosen has collated 8 case studies from across the UK and Ireland which include forced labour; forced criminality; domestic servitude and sexual exploitation on which participants are invited to create a short film.
The competition is open to anyone who would like to make a film – amateur or professional under the age of 26 – on the case studies provided. The closing date for registration is May 23rd and final date for submission is 13th August 2013.
The winning films will be taken on an awareness raising road show tour across the UK and Ireland in 2014. Unchosen is keen to hear from youth groups, local councils, community groups and any other interested parties that would like to co-host an event in 2014.
Award winning director Ken Loach is a patron of Unchosen, and a strong supporter of the competition.
The world political situation is unstable, with exploited and vulnerable people desperate to escape their circumstances. This is a breeding ground for people traffickers, with all the abuse that we know those trapped in this way suffer. Confronting those situations in film is a way of understanding what is happening, making the general particular.
Trish Davidson is the Founder and Director of Unchosen.
We want these films to be a genuine tool in the fight against trafficking. With films that reflect the actual reality of trafficking in the UK and Ireland we want to engage and sensitize audiences – not just shock them into shutdown. We want them to recognize the signs of trafficking so that more victims can be identified and given access to the support they need.
An award ceremony will take place in October in partnership with Encounters Film and Animation Festival, and the overall winner will receive a half day of audio mix time in one of ENVY’s studios – the award-winning post-film production company!
