Myriam Raja
Myriam directed ‘Kharon’ which you can watch here (we recommend you do – it’s great!) and has now gone on to study Film Production at University in Bounemouth.
Which First Light film did you work on and what was your role?
Kharon – I was the writer and director of the film.
Do you think working on a First Light funded film has inspired you to pursue a career in film and TV production?
Most definitely! Through the funding that First Light provided we were able to have professional mentors along with great facilities, all allowing for a professional and industry like atmosphere on our film’s set. It gave me a taste of what it is like to work in film production, something I really enjoyed.
Did making a First Light funded film give you an ego boost and help decide your future career path?
Most definitely! By finding out that my script was awarded the Pilot Grant I had such a big confidence boost that I wasn’t nervous at all about directing such a big project. I did find it challenging, but watching the film at the end, I can proudly tell myself that we have achieved something. I feel a lot more determined and knowledgeable, meaning I am certain about choosing film as a career path. What other films/ production projects have you been involved with since making your First Light film?
After completing my First Light project I was employed temporarily by local film production company Resource Productions and organized a film festival which just took place in September. Programming, curating and organizing a festival is quite a big task, as I discovered, but since making my First Light film, I felt confident enough to pull it off and had gained organizational and communicational skills. Being paid to do something I love was even better. Currently, I am studying for a degree in Film Production from the Arts University College at Bournemouth.
What would your ideal job be?
A film director! Can you tell us anything else about making a First Light film, or do you have any advice to young people starting out in film making?
My best advice to other young people out there is to just pick up a camera and go make a film! Everyone has good ideas and plans but only a few actually get out, get a group of friends together and actually shoot a film. Opportunities such as the ones First Light provides are always available and it’s a good idea to keep a look out for these.
Finally, and I know this is a hard question, what is your favourite film and why?
This definitely is a hard question! My favourite film would have to be Mathieu Kassovitz’ 1995 film ‘La Haine’. It is a French film (translates to The Hate) and it is my favourite film because it is such a timeless classic that feels new and refreshing every time I watch it.
